Terms, data and privacy

World Indicator is a personal project that retrieves published statistics from eight international organisations and draws charts from them. It is not affiliated with any of those organisations, and none of them endorse it.

It is offered as is, with no warranty and no guarantee that it will keep working, keep its data current, or keep existing. Do not use it as the sole basis for a decision that matters.

Every number shown here belongs to the organisation that published it, and each one licenses its data on its own terms. Some permit commercial reuse with attribution. Others, including the World Health Organization and The DHS Program, permit non-commercial reuse only and prohibit resale.

The full per-source licence, the exact attribution each publisher requires, and the caveats that come with it are set out on the sources page. If you intend to reuse anything you find here, read the terms of the publisher it came from rather than relying on this site.

The organisations whose data appears here do not endorse this application and do not warrant the accuracy, completeness or timeliness of anything presented in it. Charts, comparisons, summaries and any AI-generated text are produced by this application alone and do not represent the views or policies of the World Health Organization, the United Nations, the World Bank, the OECD, UNICEF, the IMF, the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, or The DHS Program.

Data is retrieved and cached periodically, so figures may lag the publisher. Consult the original source for anything authoritative.

Some text on this site is written by a language model rather than a person. It is always labelled as such where it appears, it describes how indicators are generally studied rather than interpreting your chart, and it is reviewed by a person before it is published. It can still be wrong. Verify anything you rely on.

No data about you is sent to a model. That text is generated offline, ahead of time, and stored as a file in this repository. Using the site does not call a model.

Two things, and both were built to hold as little as possible.

Usage

Which pages and indicators get opened, which chart types get used, the country your request arrives from, whether the screen is phone-sized, and the site that linked you here.

It is tied to two random identifiers generated by your browser, one kept until you clear site data and one lasting until you close the tab. They exist to count how many different people visit rather than how many clicks happen. They are random, they mean nothing anywhere else, and clearing your browser storage makes you a new person as far as this site is concerned.

Not collected: your IP address is read only to rate limit the endpoint and is discarded without being stored; no browser user agent; no account identifier, even when you are signed in; no advertising or cross-site identifier of any kind. Country comes from an edge header specifically so that an address never has to be stored.

Feedback

If you submit the feedback form, it stores what you wrote, the page you were on, your name if you chose to give one, and your browser user agent. It is emailed to the maintainer. Do not put anything confidential in it.

Accounts

Accounts are optional and the site works fully without one. If you create one, the sign-in provider holds your email address, and this site stores the charts you save and your chart display settings, readable only by you. Delete your account and they go with it.

No advertising or tracking cookies are set. The site stores a small amount of data in your browser: the two random usage identifiers described above, your light or dark preference, your saved chart settings and bookmarks, and your name if you gave one to the feedback form so it does not ask twice. Signing in adds a session cookie from the authentication provider.

Clearing site data in your browser removes all of it.

Hosting and page analytics are provided by Vercel, which collects its own aggregate page metrics. The database is provided by Supabase and sign-in by Clerk. Feedback notification emails are sent through Resend. Nothing is sold, shared with advertisers, or used to build a profile of you, because none of what is stored would support one.

The usage log has no way to identify you, so there is nothing in it that can be looked up or removed on request. That is a deliberate trade: not being able to answer that question is the consequence of not collecting the thing that would answer it.

Feedback and account data can be. Ask via the feedback form or the contact link below and say what you would like removed.
